Sex during menopause? Absolutely. Let's talk about it.

Sex during menopause? Absolutely. Let's talk about it.

Let’s start by saying that yes, you can (and should, if you want to!) have sex during menopause. Sex for women over 50 is something that’s definitely not talked about very much, which is ridiculous because people that age definitely have lots of sex. (Hello, did anyone see Gillian Anderson in Sex Education!?)

Sex during menopause: how menopause can change  your sex life

Still, there are considerations for all women who are in menopause and who are also sexually active. Common symptoms of menopause include hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and mood changes, which can of course have an impact on your sex life. But menopause does not have to be the end of good sex!

Menopause and pain during sex

Sex after menopause can be painful – even if that pain is temporary. Most of the time, menopausal pain while having sex is related to a loss of estrogen. That can on occasion cause vaginal atrophy or genitourinary syndrome of menopause, in which the vaginal tissue becomes thinner and more delicate. Issues like pain, vaginal dryness, and urinary problems can crop up as a result of vaginal atrophy. Around half of postmenopausal people experience these symptoms.

What can help pain during menopausal sex

The use of vaginal lubricants helps a lot of women ease vaginal discomfort. In fact, many doctors recommend using a lubricant to help make sex more enjoyable if you experience vaginal dryness. If you’re new to lube, there are several types: silicone-based, oil-based, water-based, and hybrids. Generally, water-based lubes that don’t contain glycerin are a good choice because they’re suitable for people with sensitive skin.

Included in your Key for Menopause Remedy Blend is the Below the Belt Complex*, which we specifically formulated to combat vaginal dryness, low libido, and urinary issues. Nettle root is included for its longstanding traditional use in easing vaginal dryness and discomfort, and we’ve also included Shatavari, which may help balance pH levels and reduce vaginal dryness.

Menopause and your sex drive

Many women experience a dip in their libido during menopause. This is not scientific per se, (and that might be because of the lack of research around the subject). In any case, it’s often difficult for doctors to pinpoint the cause of reduced libido, but trust your body during menopause and take action accordingly. Simple changes like more exercise help make sure your blood is flowing properly, which is an essential part of enjoying sex.

We’ve included French Maritime Pine Park in your Below the Belt Complex*, because many studies have linked it to helping with a loss of libido.

The psychological effects of menopause on your sex life

Menopause can have mental and emotional effects, too. Even the idea of losing your period can be psychologically distressing. This in itself can cause feelings of anxiety and depression. Lower estrogen can also trigger hot flashes that make it difficult to sleep, leading to mood swings and anxiety.

Coupled with any emotional distress from losing your period, you understandably may not be in the mood to have sex. If you feel down for more than two weeks, you should speak to your healthcare provider.

The final word on sex during menopause

If you’re in perimenopause or menopause, you should still expect that you enjoy an active sex life. Indeed, sexual satisfaction might actually increase! After all, once you’ve been period-free for a year, the worry of being pregnant is no longer there. That, and many women feel more confident in themselves and their bodies in their 40s and 50s. We’re delighted that so many women report they’ve had their best orgasms of their lives in later life!
