What Vitamin Is Good For Hair? 5 Vitamins For Hair Growth & Thickness

There’s a lot of speculation on what women want. Is it fun? Is it a telepathic Mel Gibson, a la the 2000 rom-com ‘What Women Want’? Is it diamonds, puppies, fundamental human rights? (Yes, yes, and duh.)

What about a head of really great hair? A survey conducted by lookfantastic.com (1) reported that American women drop an average of $55,000 in their lifetime on their hair. So yes, good hair might be high on the priority list. (It definitely is for us!) But how can we achieve good hair? Can vitamins help? And what vitamin is good for hair, making it thicker, stronger, and healthier.

Common Problems With Women’s Hair

Unfortunately, hair loss is a common symptom of hormonal imbalance in women. In women, this usually comes in the form of hair thinning rather than balding patches, as it does for men. During menopause, when estrogen and progesterone levels drop, many women find that their hair begins to thin. But hair problems aren’t just relegated to women going through menopause. Other factors like stress levels, illness, or nutrient deficiencies can all cause hair loss or hair thinning.

Hair thinning was one of the first symptoms that prompted our co-founder, Renée, to turn to natural remedies. And with a cabinet overspilling with vitamins and herbals, she knew there had to be a better solution. (Watch our founder video here (link) for more on our Renée & Donna’s journey with Key!)

5 Vitamins For Thicker, Stronger, Healthier Hair

When we were creating our Key Remedy Blends for Menopause, we knew that hair loss was a major concern for many women during this time, and so we put a lot of focus into finding ingredients to support healthy, luscious locks. We also know that women of every age and life stage want healthy hair — so if you’re looking at taking our Key for Menstrual product, we have you covered, too.

1. Vitamin E

This powerhouse vitamin benefits your body inside and out, and is a star ingredient in many beauty products. Vitamin E is found in our Key Essentials Blend, for every life stage.

Why your body needs it

Vitamin E’s antioxidant power means it helps protect your body from free radicals, which are molecules produced when your body breaks down food, or is exposed to smoke or radiation. This helps protect your hair (and skin, and nails) from deterioration. It also helps to boost the immune system, and has anti-ageing properties!

2. Biotin

Also known as vitamin H, biotin is a B-complex vitamin that helps your body convert food into energy. Biotin is found in your Key Essentials Blend, for every life stage.

Why your body needs it

Biotin acts as an essential cofactor, which allows enzymes to work efficiently, and is critical for your metabolism. A healthy metabolism helps with hair growth, which is why biotin is known to support healthy hair, skin, and nails. Biotin is found in our Key Essentials Blend.

3. Silica Horsetail

Though images of bald-tailed horses jump to mind, the horsetail we use is actually a popular fern that has been used as an herbal remedy for thousands of years. It grows wild in Northern Europe and America. It is found in our Natural Glow Complex for Menopause.

Why your body needs it

Horsetail contains Silica, which has a wide range of potential health benefits. It is believed to promote bone, skin, nail and hair health, as well as hair growth (2), thanks to its silicon and antioxidant contents. Like Vitamin E, it reduces the appearance of age in your hair, caused by free radicals, while the silicon gives your hair an added brightness.

4. Zinc Citrate

Zinc is considered an essential trace mineral, because small amounts of it are essential to processes throughout your body. And because the body does not store zinc, it must be incorporated as part of your regular diet. When it comes to zinc, absorption is key; that’s why we use the highly absorbable form of Zinc Citrate. Zinc Citrate is included in our Key Essentials Blend.

Why your body needs it

Healthy levels of zinc may support the maintenance of healthy hormone levels, which can help reduce the ill effects of hormonal imbalances. It also contributes to normal cognitive function and the maintenance of normal hair, skin and nails — so the positives abound!

Remember: Hormonal shifts during menstruation and especially menopause can cause a lot of changes in your body, but assuming something is ‘just menopause’ or ‘just your period’ can leave you vulnerable to other medical issues. Always consult your doctor with any health concerns. The information on Keyforher.com is never meant to replace advice or care from your healthcare provider.
